Misc. Materials Collected by Mortvedt (1976-1982)

This file contains miscellaneous materials collected by Dr. Mortvedt during his retirement including a program from Peninsula Lutheran Church in Gig Harbor, programs from the Rotary Club Banquet honoring DR. Mortvedt, and the program from the centennial celebration of Platville Lutheran Church.

Genealogical Information (1903-1978)

Dr. Mortvedt’s birth certificate, depositions to public notaries regarding his father’s birthdate, correspondence on family history and genealogy and family trees. File also contains a Pedigree chart of the Mortvedt family dating back to 1560 prepared by a relative. Two publications are included: “The Bernt Oluf Eggen Family Supplement” ( a family history from Dr. Mortvedt’s mother’s side), and “Part of a Family Story for Our Grandchildren” written by Robert Mortvedt.

Obituaries (1991-1992)

Obituaries, newspaper clippings, memorial service church bulletins, and statements by Dr. William O. Rieke to faculty, regents, and staff in regard to Dr. Mortvedt’s death.

Shopping Abroad Receipts (1950-1965)

Dr. Mortvedt purchased many things while traveling abroad. He kept meticulous notes and all the receipts of the items he purchased. File includes: receipts, notes, and correspondence with customs officials when items were delayed or lost.

Correspondence (1953-1955)

The correspondence in this file focuses on the scandal at UKC resulting from president Decker's misrepresentation of facts about the university. The resulting conflict between president Decker and Dr. Mortvedt drew in many other members of the faculty, the students, and the Board of Regents. Most of the letters are supportive and Dr. Mortvedt's responses to these letters are included. A few venture criticism or regret of Dr. Mortvedt's actions. Also included are letters regarding Dr. Mortvedt's search for future positions. At the end of the file, there are a few letters regarding president Decker's post-UKC employment and his effect on that working environment.

Clippings from Kansas City newspapers regarding the UKC crisis. Topics covered include: the resignation of faculty heads, the campus rally to discuss the issue, the speech made by President Decker to students, President Decker's resignation, the vote of "no confidence" by students and staff, and the resolution of the situation.

Dr. Mortvedt’s correspondence from 1969 containing both personal correspondence and general university business memoranda. Major topics include: faculty committees, Dr. Eugene Wiegman’s presidency, President Mortvedt’s retirement, Inter-Church relations, President Mortvedt’s heart attack, and the Vietnam War moratorium.
