Papers of Robert A.L. Mortvedt, President at Pacific Lutheran University, 1962-1969. This collection contains correspondence, speeches, and clippings from Mortvedt’s time at several different universities including the University of Kansas City, Bethany College, and Pacific Lutheran University.

Contents are arranged by subject, and whenever possible, the original order has been preserved. Within the files, materials are ordered chronologically. This collection is arranged into thirteen series, outlined below. Much of the collection pertains to Dr. Mortvedt’s years as president of PLU, but there are also materials regarding his undergraduate and graduate work, his years at the University of Kansas City, his presidency at Bethany College, his work with the Board of Education of the Lutheran Church, and his activities after retiring from PLU. There are also materials concerning his father, A.O. Mortvedt, and other relatives. This collection also includes numerous documents concerning the Higher Education Fund Committee and the Independent Colleges of Washington Association. Also included (in Series 11-13) are artifacts, oversized documents, and taped interviews in PLU’s Oral Histories collections regarding Dr. Mortvedt’s time as University President.

Retirement (1968-1969)

Materials related to Dr. Mortvedt’s retirement from PLU including: a copy of the 1968 PLU “Knightletter” announcing his retirement, the University Bulletin “Reflection” (1969) with a farewell notes from Dr. Mortvedt “Ave Atque Vale,” and an article outlining his time at PLU entitled “The Man of the 1960s/Dr. Robert Mortvedt.” Also included is the program from the Alumni Association dinner honoring Dr. Mortvedt and “The St. Olaf Alumnus” magazine (1969) where his retirement is also announced.

Reports from Pacific Lutheran University to the Columbia Conference of the Augustana Lutheran Church, the Pacific Northwest Synod of the Lutheran Church in America, the Pacific Lutheran University Association, and the Committee on Higher Education, North Pacific District, American Lutheran Church (1962-1967). Issues discussed are: the financial status of the university, the needs of the university, development, academic records, religious life on campus, and the PLUS plan.

Reports to President Decker (1946-1952)

Reports to President Decker from Dr. Mortvedt and other faculty and staff members about the state of the university and various programs, staff members, and offices within it. Major concerns include enrollment, curriculum development, tuition, and student work-study.
