Correspondence – Luther College Accreditation

This file includes letter(s) to the State Board of Public Instruction written by Xavier concerning the accreditation of Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. Correspondence between Xavier and various individuals in noted in this document.

Master Thesis

File includes two copies from Xavier’s Master Thesis (written in Norwegian) submitted to the University of Washington in 1929 for the Degree of Master of the Arts. One copy appears to be from Xavier’s personal library and the other was from the PLC library.

Cash Ledgers

A series of cash ledgers (each with Xavier’s name at the top) detailing expenses with dates ranging from 1867 to 1901. Contents of the ledgers vary and are possibly practice figure books from Xavier’s early education.

Diary 1896

This diary was possibly kept during his time at Luther Seminary. This diary mentions time visiting with professors, printing on with a mimeograph, and visits and/or spends time with Stubs. At the back of the book there is an account of letters sent/received and a list of addresses. In the back pocket there are the following: a receipt for a $10 money order, receipt from Lutheran Publishing House, Minneapolis Paper Company, a American Express company, and an advertisement for “Chinese sensitive leaf.”

Diary 1898

This diary was possibly kept during his time at Luther Seminary. Xavier mentions that he is still printing, had obtained a bicycle and spends time riding, visits home during the summer, and preaches at nearby churches amidst his usual chores. It also contains a cash account, expenses, and a letter at the back of the diary.

Diary 1899

In this diary Xavier begins his year at the University of Minnesota (possibly preaching), mentions that he continues printing, writes about the weather, receives an offer of employment as a Professor of Latin (location unknown), frequently studies Latin, continues to write in code, writes a book at home during the summer, and begins to teach 3rd year Latin in the fall at Lutheran Ladies Seminary. Letters, accounts, and addresses are included in the back of the diary.
