Diaries

This series contains the almost yearly diaries kept by Professor Xavier. In these diaries, Xavier wrote nearly every day about the weather, recorded the deaths within the community, and kept records of the prices of various purchases or bills. However, these diaries rarely have any mention of exact locations and sometimes Xavier wrote in a secret code identified in his notebooks as the J.U. + H.O. code.

This diary was possibly kept during his time at Luther Seminary. In this diary Xavier mentions that he is still working on printing, writes letters and reads on Sundays, begins to write, print, and preaching a large number of sermons (of which he sends mimeographed copies off), on October 23 he shaved part of his beard off and did not like the result, and continues to play tennis with friends.

In it he frequently writes and mentions choir, that he “staid home” to read and write, offer of employment as President at Bode Academy, with graduation on August 7th. This diary contains a receipt form Ben Bear Square-Dealing Clothier, records of love letters sent through his friend, regular work (location or position unnamed), time spent with a woman named Miss Anable, that he read Les Miserables and attended choir practice. In this diary Xavier no longer writes about the weather, writes often in code, and crosses out a number of pages. A cash account and account of letters sent/received appears at the end of the diary. This diary is missing from the collection.

Diary 1896

This diary was possibly kept during his time at Luther Seminary. This diary mentions time visiting with professors, printing on with a mimeograph, and visits and/or spends time with Stubs. At the back of the book there is an account of letters sent/received and a list of addresses. In the back pocket there are the following: a receipt for a $10 money order, receipt from Lutheran Publishing House, Minneapolis Paper Company, a American Express company, and an advertisement for “Chinese sensitive leaf.”

Diary 1898

This diary was possibly kept during his time at Luther Seminary. Xavier mentions that he is still printing, had obtained a bicycle and spends time riding, visits home during the summer, and preaches at nearby churches amidst his usual chores. It also contains a cash account, expenses, and a letter at the back of the diary.

Diary 1899

In this diary Xavier begins his year at the University of Minnesota (possibly preaching), mentions that he continues printing, writes about the weather, receives an offer of employment as a Professor of Latin (location unknown), frequently studies Latin, continues to write in code, writes a book at home during the summer, and begins to teach 3rd year Latin in the fall at Lutheran Ladies Seminary. Letters, accounts, and addresses are included in the back of the diary.

Diary 1900

This diary was kept while Xavier was attending the University of Minnesota and teaching at Ladies Lutheran Seminary. It is mentioned throughout his diary that he teaches Latin, “Political Geography,” and Geometry, discovers he is nearsighted, learns to use a typewriter, notes the physical and scholastic condition of his students, takes the oath of citizenship, attends teacher’s meetings, returns home for the summer collecting money for the school and reading, travels to Stanley Falls, and returns to LLS in the fall. He often forgets to write and continues the next year’s entries until January 3rd in the memorandum section. Cash accounts and addresses are included in the back of the diary.
