Mortvedt Library (1963-1977)

Materials regarding the planning and building of Robert A.L. Mortvedt Library including the following: pamphlets on the "Program of the Long Range University Specifics" (PLUS) plan, a thank you card for donors, memos on planning the library, choice of and correspondence with Bindon & Wright as architects including architectural sketches and personal notes, "The Program for the Proposed New Library Building at Pacific Lutheran University" ( a report by The Librarian, Frank H. Haley), statements on the purpose of the library and how it will be built. Also included are minutes of the "Committee on Dedication of Library,” an excerpt from the minutes of the Board of Regents in which the library is named Robert A.L. Mortvedt Library, planning documents for the move of the collection the new library, Vesper Service on November 23, 1966 to move the first books across the threshold, and a biography of the keynote speaker, Dr. Jaroslav Pelikan. There is an invitation to the dedication, program for the dedication including a symposium: "Learning Resources in the Expanded Role of the Robert A.L. Mortvedt Library, informational statements on the library, and materials from the tenth anniversary of Robert A. L. Mortvedt library including the remarks of the keynote speaker, Dr. Jaroslav Pelikan, "On the Social Uses of Solitude", and Dr. Mortvedt's remarks.

Programs (1963-1977)

An assortment of programs for events that Dr. Mortvedt attended and/or at which he spoke. Included programs are as follows: The Reformation Festival (Seattle, WA on October 28, 1962), Eastern Washington State College Commencement (1963), PLU Opening Convocation (1963), Karen Levang Memorial Service (1963), the Joint Convocation of PLU and UPS with John F. Kennedy as speaker (1963), May 17th Festival (Seattle, WA for 1964 and 1977), Madigan General Hospital Intern Graduation Program (1964), PLU Opening Convocation (1964), Baccalaureate Service (1965), Invitation for the reception honoring the Mortvedt's 40th wedding anniversary (1966), GAMMA Spring Luncheon honoring Mrs. Mortvedt (1969), Easter Chapel (1969), The Baltic Nations Day (1968), Dedication of Our Savior's Lutheran Church (Everett, Washington in 1969), The Annie Wright Seminary's 85th Commencement (1969), and a Pacific Lutheran Chapel Service program (1969).

An assortment of pamphlets Dr. Mortvedt collected concerning the relationship between business and education including the following: “Letters for Leaders,” “Business and Education Need Each Other” by Joseph C. Wilson, “The Buck Stops Here in Higher Education” by William F. May, “Voluntary Support—Education’s Margin for Freedom” by Neil McElroy, “Private Enterprise’s Public Responsibility by John D. Harper, “Unrest on the Campus: Which way to a better World?” by Lawrence Kimpton, and “Why is Unrestricted Giving Important to Higher Education.”

Correspondence-Lloyd Young (1965-1966)

File contains correspondence from 1965-1966 with Mr. Lloyd Young, President of “Stewardship and Counseling Service, Inc.”, regarding his position as Assistant to President Mortvedt in charge of fundraising. Subjects cover the objective to increase gifts and grants to PLU from $650,000 (1964-1965) to $1,050,000 by July 31, 1966.

Reports to the PLU Corporation regarding the state of the university, the academic program, religious life, enrollment, finances, co-curricular activities, long-range development, and personnel changes from 1963-1968.

Clippings spanning president Mortvedt's career at PLU. Topics include the new library, President Kennedy's visit, honorary doctorates, and Dr. Mortvedt's retirement.

Retirement (1968-1969)

Materials related to Dr. Mortvedt’s retirement from PLU including: a copy of the 1968 PLU “Knightletter” announcing his retirement, the University Bulletin “Reflection” (1969) with a farewell notes from Dr. Mortvedt “Ave Atque Vale,” and an article outlining his time at PLU entitled “The Man of the 1960s/Dr. Robert Mortvedt.” Also included is the program from the Alumni Association dinner honoring Dr. Mortvedt and “The St. Olaf Alumnus” magazine (1969) where his retirement is also announced.
