Family History

Materials regarding the genealogy of the Schnackenberg family (1970-1973). Letters are primarily from Eva (Schnackenburg) Sudlow who initiated correspondence in an attempt to advance her research on the family’s history. Also, included are sketches the Schnackenberg Wappen (Crest), a general history dating back to the medieval times, and photos from her travels related to this research.

Correspondence from Dr. Schnackenberg’s daughters including letters from college, a telegram of congratulations on The Lamp and the Cross, Christmas cards, Christmas lists, handmade Fathers’ Day cards, and personal letters. This file is denoted as confidential.

General Faculty Activities, 1968-1973

Materials regarding Dr. Schnackenberg’s activities as a faculty member. File includes: the adopted Pacific Lutheran University Faculty Constitution and Bylaws (1968-1969), proposal regarding the creation of a Center for Human Organization, “Teetering on the Edge” an address given by A. Dean Buchanan, an address given at Lutheran Faculties Conference (1972), minutes of faculty meetings, memo from the Educational Policies committee (1972), Proposal for the Nursing Curriculum, memos from Dr. Wiegman, memos regarding the proposal by the Port of Tacoma and Seattle to open an air freight terminal near campus.

Title IV

Materials regarding the National Defense Education Act (1958) which encouraged the creation and expansion facilities of graduate study. Dr. Schnackenberg served as the chair of the resultant committee. File includes Higher Education and National Affairs bulletins, agendas for a regional conference on the National Defense Education Act, preliminary committee reports, applications for graduate fellowships, descriptive statement of the program proposal, correspondence regarding the legislation, proposals for grant money, and letters documenting the rejection of some of PLU’s proposals by the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare.

Extra Teaching Policy

Materials regarding the policy to restrict outside teaching by faculty members and Dr. Schnackenberg’s role as the head of the committee considering the policy. File includes: Schnackenberg’s response to Mortvedt’s formulation of the policy, correspondence between various administrators and faculty members, questionnaires for faculty members, the final formulation of a policy on extra-mural activities, and returned surveys.

Honorary Doctorates

Materials on the criteria for honorary doctorates and the procedure for presentation. File includes: memos to the Educational Policies Committee, worksheets on criteria, a memo from President Wiegman to establish an ad hoc committee to study the criteria, and a list of honorary doctorate recipients.
