Spokane College Records

Records of Spokane College, a Lutheran higher education institution that existed from 1905-1929. The records were transferred to Pacific Lutheran College when the Spokane College ceased operations. The records include legal documents, subscription lists, Spokane College Ledger, Spokane College Bulletin and Course Catalog, Collfax, Echo, and Aromaz publications, and photographs.

Files may also include correspondence, event information, membership lists, and other records relating student organization operations.

The Montana Congregation Files contain limited information on Lutheran congregations in Alaska received either from regional Synod offices or directly from the congregation. Files may contain Congregational Historical Record forms, written histories of the church, service programs and bulletins, Congregational Statistical Record forms, and newspaper clippings. For a limited number of congregations, photographs and/or Parish Records are also included.

Chris Tumbusch Photographs

The Chris Tumbusch Photographs record group is comprised of scanned images of the print photographs and negatives of PLU Director of Photography Services Chris Tumbusch, who served in that capacity from 1995 to 2003. Descriptions of the images are from a legacy system and are considered unverified. On scans of print photos verso text has been appended to the description when available and is preceded by the note "Back of photo."

The record group is divided into two series, Prints and Negatives. The Prints series is subdivided into Files of 50 images each. The Negatives series is split into subseries for each year.

Johan Xavier Papers

The Papers of Johan Xavier contains materials related to Xavier's time as a student at Luther College and Luther Seminary and his work at Pacific Lutheran Academy as the librarian from 1908-1918 and as acting president from 1920 to 1921. Also included in this collection are several cash ledgers kept by Xavier to track his finances.

Oscar Tingelstad Papers

Papers of Oscar A. Tingelstad, President at Pacific Lutheran University, 1928-1943. The collection consists of correspondence, materials from Oscar A. Tingelstad’s inauguration, financial and stock information and miscellaneous materials from 1928 to 1952. The majority of these materials comes from 1931 to 1937 and is copies from the Tingelstad papers housed at St. Olaf University (the Norwegian-American Historical Association). This collection is arranged into four series and arranged chronologically within each file.

The correspondence is almost entirely related to Tingelstad’s position as the editor of the Pacific Lutheran College publication The Pacific Lutheran Herald, and covers the years 1931 – 1937. The inauguration materials include programs and related correspondence. The financial and stock information includes a book containing a list of the bonds, stocks, and pertinent information held by Oscar A. Tingelstad. The remainder of the collection contains miscellaneous documents belonging to Tingelstad, most pertaining to his work as president of Pacific Lutheran College. Also included are artifacts and other oversized documents related to Dr. Tingelstad’s time as President.

New Land, New Lives Oral History Collection

The Oral History collection contains the recorded interviews of 282 men and women who emigrated from Scandinavia and settled in the Pacific Northwest. The project was started during an experimental course on Scandinavian Women in the Pacific Northwest. Students in the course were encouraged to interview women and learn about their experiences as immigrants to the United States. The project was continued and expanded with support from the president’s office and by grants from the L.J. Skaggs and Mary C. Skaggs Foundation, from the Joel E. Ferris Foundation and the Norwegian Emigration Fund of the Royal Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The project was directed by Dr. Janet E. Rasmussen. Upon completion, the collection was transferred to the Archives and Special Collections Department.
