Swedish Tercentenary Program

A program commemorating the 300th Anniversary of Swedish people in America (1638-1938), beginning with the establsihment of the first Swedish Settlement in Delaware. This file contains a festival program for the celebrations commemorating 300 years of Swedish history in America, beginning with the founding of a Swedish settlement at Poutatax Creek in Delaware. The program consists of commemorative announcements by the Washington State governor and Seattle mayor, a timeline of related events since 1583 and the birth of Axel Oxenstierna, a list of speeches, pageants and songs performed, lists of founding members of the committees and organizations that contributed to the tercententenary event, advertisements from sponsoring local businesses, and the end of a commemorative speech by Dr. G.A. Magnusson of Gethsemane Lutheran Church.

Genealogical information on the Sandhill Swedes, the John Dahlin family in America. The manuscript is divided into four parts. Part one is a family tree with biographies of John Dahlin’s parents and siblings. Part two discusses the history of John’s wife, Maria (Marie) Wilhelmina Jernberg Dahlin. It also includes the biographies of their children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Part three is a list of genealogical information. Part four is a personal reflection of the author’s grandparents, John and Marie Dahlin, and her aunts and uncles.

Berggren Family History

Family history of the Berggren family, beginning with Johan Olofsson, born circa 1620. He was married to Karin (last name unknown), born in 1631, died in 1706. They had four children. Olofsson was a miner on the Saxan farm and was a juror and county judge until 1679. He was a member of parliament for several terms. The history is written in Swedish, first published in 1908.

Anna Collier Autobiography - "The Critic"

Two copies of Anna Collier's autobiography. The manuscript was originally written by Anna Collier between June 30 and August 12, 1926. It was handwritten on lined paper and in 1978 a typed transcript was made by her grandson Alex M. Cole, Jr. The manuscript describes her childhood in Sweden and her years in Utah, growing up in the midst of the establishment of the Mormon community in Utah, her married life, her life as a single mother, and her later years caring for her family.

Ivar Bjørndal Manuscript

Ivar Bjørndal, representing the Norwegian government, gives impressions of West Coast American educational institutions during his 1986 visit. This collection consists of a report written in Norwegian by Ivar Bjørndal on aspects of secondary schooling in the United States. There are also copies of ads and brochures used in this research.

Syver Svenson Rodning Biography

The biography, autobiography, and photocopies of personal documents of immigrant Syver Svenson Rodning, born in 1869 in Hallingdal, Norway. He came to America in 1894, studied at Augsburg Seminary for three years, moved to North Dakota in 1901, and married Bergit Bjella in 1907. Elected to office in 1921, Syver was Register of Deeds in Minnewaukan County for fourteen years. He passed away in 1937. This collection consists of two folders of biographical information on Syver Swenson Rodning. One folder contains a biography of Syver Swenson Rodning written in 1987 by his son Richard Rodning. The biography includes family information as well as copies of documents: letters, maps, pictures, emigrant rates of passage, graduation certificate, record of naturalization, homestead certificate, marriage license for Syver and Bergit, product and grocery advertisements, Syver’s campaign poster, and poems written by Syver. There is also information on Syver’s brothers and sisters. The other folder contains a story written by Syver Swenson Rodning about his childhood, adolescence, and immigration translated in 1993 by Richard Rodning. The original was published in “Skandinaven", dated 1938 and 1939.

A 210-page scrapbook with lists of about 125 ancestors of Nils O. Urness and Juditha Batalden and about 250 of their descendants. There are about 800 photographs. It is divided into four sections. Section A is an introduction, section B details Nils O. Urness and his ancestors, section C details Juditha Batalden and her ancestors, and section D details the descendants of Nils and Juditha through the year 2000.

Consists of a manuscript, "Privies, Charivaris, and Bedbugs, or Life on the Farm in the Olden Days,"covering James Bramblet’s life on his family farm in the 1920s and 1930s. This manuscript is divided into chapters discussing where he lived, when there was no running water, his one-room country school, work done on the farm, entertainment on the farm, animals on the farm, how inventions changed the farm, medical problems on the farm, and religion on the farm. There are also photocopied pictures of the family and their homes.
