Dr. Mortvedt’s birth certificate, depositions to public notaries regarding his father’s birthdate, correspondence on family history and genealogy and family trees. File also contains a Pedigree chart of the Mortvedt family dating back to 1560 prepared by a relative. Two publications are included: “The Bernt Oluf Eggen Family Supplement” ( a family history from Dr. Mortvedt’s mother’s side), and “Part of a Family Story for Our Grandchildren” written by Robert Mortvedt.

Papers of Robert A.L. Mortvedt, President at Pacific Lutheran University, 1962-1969. This collection contains correspondence, speeches, and clippings from Mortvedt’s time at several different universities including the University of Kansas City, Bethany College, and Pacific Lutheran University.

Contents are arranged by subject, and whenever possible, the original order has been preserved. Within the files, materials are ordered chronologically. This collection is arranged into thirteen series, outlined below. Much of the collection pertains to Dr. Mortvedt’s years as president of PLU, but there are also materials regarding his undergraduate and graduate work, his years at the University of Kansas City, his presidency at Bethany College, his work with the Board of Education of the Lutheran Church, and his activities after retiring from PLU. There are also materials concerning his father, A.O. Mortvedt, and other relatives. This collection also includes numerous documents concerning the Higher Education Fund Committee and the Independent Colleges of Washington Association. Also included (in Series 11-13) are artifacts, oversized documents, and taped interviews in PLU’s Oral Histories collections regarding Dr. Mortvedt’s time as University President.

File contains an autobiographical sketch of Ariel Osmundsen Mortvedt (1943), a biographical sketch written in 1908, and an open letter from Dr. Robert Mortvedt to his father on his 85th birthday, A.O. Mortvedt’s obituary, newspaper clippings and correspondence regarding his death. Also included is the commemorative program of the 100th Anniversary of Plattville Lutheran Church, where A.O. Mortvedt served as pastor, and five issues of the “Bethesda Gleanings,” a publication of the Bethesda Home for the Aged, where A.O. Mortvedt resided until the end of his life.

Yearbook 1922-1923 for St. Olaf College where Robert Mortvedt was a member of the Intersociety Oratorical, a program from a dramatic performance at St. Olaf, program from Augustana College Baccalaureate, copyright registration from the Library of Congress for “Let’s Talk About Literature,” and poems by Philip Gran.

This file contains the following speeches and papers given by Mortvedt from 1923-1943:
“Give Me My Pound!” (1923), “Lincoln” (St. Olaf College, 1928), “Education Without Graduation” (Commencement at St. Olaf College), “A Stroll the Emmaus Road” (Sermon for Chapel, January 19, 1934), “Youth’s Place to Stand”, “Edmond Rostand”( St. Stephens College), “We Seek a Country” (Augustana College, June 6, 1939), and “Measurement of Progress” (Stephens College).

Correspondence occurring after Dr. Mortvedt had finished graduate school while he was teaching at various colleges (St. Olaf, Stephens). Letters are about students being considered for college and Dr. Mortvedt’s resignation from and appointments to positions at different colleges. Correspondence includes letters from Dr. Preus, L.W. Boe, A.O. Mortvedt, friends, co-workers, and letters Dr. Mortvedt sent in response.

This file contains a summary of theses from Harvard (1934), summaries of Mortvedt’s dissertation entitled “Thomas Morton: His Life and Works” (in published and original form), and an essay entitled “The Dramatic Works of Thomas Morton.
