National Defense of Education Act, Modern Languages

Articles and pamphlets on the study of foreign languages collected by Dr. Schnackenberg under the heading “National Defense of Education Act”. File includes: a pamphlet entitled “The Role of Modern Languages in Our Schools” (1956), pamphlet “Factors Involved in Good Modern Language Teaching” (1958), pamphlet “Grammar--Beware!” (1957), news releases on actions taken under the National Defense Act for the creation of foreign language institutes, and a copy of The Modern Language Journal (1959).

Materials regarding the Alumni Association. File includes: lists of graduates, an organizational chart, a copy of “Tacoma Progress,” copies of “Alumnus” the Pacific Lutheran University alumni bulletin, correspondence, minutes of board meetings, a copy of “Luther Alumnus,” a pamphlet for non-tax supported colleges, a list of financial contributions, an outline of the Alumni Fund Program, and a copy of the faculty constitution.

Title IV

Materials regarding the National Defense Education Act (1958) which encouraged the creation and expansion facilities of graduate study. Dr. Schnackenberg served as the chair of the resultant committee. File includes Higher Education and National Affairs bulletins, agendas for a regional conference on the National Defense Education Act, preliminary committee reports, applications for graduate fellowships, descriptive statement of the program proposal, correspondence regarding the legislation, proposals for grant money, and letters documenting the rejection of some of PLU’s proposals by the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare.
