Mikkel C. Thompson Papers

Contains materials related to the career of Mikkel Thompson, including personal documents pertaining to his life as a pastor and his musical composition. Although a pastor, he also had an extreme love and passion for music, and music composition. Many of his compositions were written for the church, but he also wrote a number of pieces for his own pleasure that are not dated, nor, at this time, have any recognizable references. Also included here are musical selections he composed to various writers’ poetry, mainly Gertrud Schnackenberg whose father Walter Schnackenberg was a PLU history professor until his death in 1973.

The Montana Congregation Files contain limited information on Lutheran congregations in Alaska received either from regional Synod offices or directly from the congregation. Files may contain Congregational Historical Record forms, written histories of the church, service programs and bulletins, Congregational Statistical Record forms, and newspaper clippings. For a limited number of congregations, photographs and/or Parish Records are also included.

Mooring Mast

The Mooring Mast is PLU’s student-run newspaper, first printed in 1924. The unusual name of the newspaper came from the USS Shenandoah, a U.S. Navy airship. In nearby Fort Lewis there was a large mooring structure for the airship and the students derived the name from this in honor of the famed ship. Throughout its existence the newspaper was published as either 'The Mooring Mast' or 'The Mast.' The series in this collection show the different titles of the publication and years during which it was published as such. The newspaper includes coverage of campus events and activities, local and national news, athletics, editorials, and other information on student life and activities.

New Land, New Lives Oral History Collection

The Oral History collection contains the recorded interviews of 282 men and women who emigrated from Scandinavia and settled in the Pacific Northwest. The project was started during an experimental course on Scandinavian Women in the Pacific Northwest. Students in the course were encouraged to interview women and learn about their experiences as immigrants to the United States. The project was continued and expanded with support from the president’s office and by grants from the L.J. Skaggs and Mary C. Skaggs Foundation, from the Joel E. Ferris Foundation and the Norwegian Emigration Fund of the Royal Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The project was directed by Dr. Janet E. Rasmussen. Upon completion, the collection was transferred to the Archives and Special Collections Department.

Nisqually Plains Collection

The Nisqually Plains Collection consists of materials on local history of the PLU area collected by Dr. Arthur Martinson. Records include historical Tacoma postcards and promotional materials, correspondence on establishing the Nisqually Plains Room, interviews with former students of Harts Lake School, and listings of photos in the collection.
