Diary 1897

This diary was possibly kept during his time at Luther Seminary. In this diary Xavier mentions that he is still working on printing, writes letters and reads on Sundays, begins to write, print, and preaching a large number of sermons (of which he sends mimeographed copies off), on October 23 he shaved part of his beard off and did not like the result, and continues to play tennis with friends.

Diary 1903

This diary, kept during Xavier’s early days at PLA, mentions his thoughts on President Harstad as a slow and uninteresting preacher (although he never mentioned it), begins preaching himself on January 11th, frequent meals with friends, experiments with photography, buys a house (possibly even a farm), returns to Iowa in the summer, returns to Parkland with his sister Anna, paints his house, buys chickens, and does house repairs. He mentions he is not in favor of co-education. His ordination is not mentioned in this diary. Lists of letters, bills, and addresses appear at the back of the diary.

Diary 1911

This diary, kept during Xavier’s time at PLA, mentions that he works mostly in the library, spends time off with Signe and (therefore) misses many of his normal events, he cuts hay and does house repairs over the summer. Addresses, a list of bills, and accounts appear at the end of the diary.

Diary 1912

This diary, kept during Xavier’s time at PLA, skips fewer days than previous diaries and mentions that is was elected treasurer at either PLA or his church, visits the dentist, and is married to Signe Skattebol on December, 27th with the note, “The day at last. S. and I took it joyfully.” A list of bills, accounts, and addresses appears at the back of the diary along with the following: a card for “Love Kisses and Up-to-Date Hugs” given by the pupils of Oak Knoll, 2 coupons from NY Portrait and Framing Company, Andrew’s Jewelers Advertisement, coupon for Physical Cultures Reader’s Subscription, an empty superior stamp wallet, part of an envelope, and letters/postcards from his father from 1898 in another language (separated in a bag).

Diary 1915

In this diary, kept during Xavier’s time at PLA, some day’s entries are made up almost entirely by numbers without explanation. However, it mentions that he watches PLA basketball with great interest, forgot Signe’s birthday “again,” dedicates Good Hope Lutheran Chapel south of Spanaway, possibly purchased a boat and Signe spends a good amount of time boating, and he is on the board of something (unspecified). Accounts appear at the back of the diary.

Diary 1928

This diary, written in a book by Augsburg Publishing, mentions that Xavier is part of the church council, but skips most of February to November. There are Coupons for Pond’s Extract Company and scraps of envelopes with addresses at the back of the diary.

Diary 1932

This diary, in a book by Augsburg Publishing, mentions more about nature—noting the first song of a Meadowlark and the first crocus, that Xavier is still preaching (location unknown, skips from July to September, and he is still in the church council. Memorandum page from another book tucked in. In back: Membership card of Puget Sound Academy of Science, unintelligible lists with accounts, and a list of addresses.

Diary 1933

In this diary Xavier mentions that he spends much time watching basketball games, playing golf, builds a doll house, plays in the Study/Faculty baseball game, and skips April through October. In back: certificate of good credit with L. Schoenfeld and Sons, a list of bills and a prediction for the next 60 years by H. G. Wells. Also tucked into the pages of the diary is a football book mark.

Diary 1936

This diary, written in a Marquette Diary, mentions that Xavier goes to Kennwick, but this is the only entry. In the front there is an offering envelope. In back: random notes, notes on cold vaccine, addresses, notes on prices, a card with special credit privileges from Schoenfeld’s.

Diary 1939

This diary, a book by Augsburg Publishing, details how the Xaviers take in a child for three months for a friend named Connie and she doesn’t sleep well. Xavier breaks his glasses by resting an arm on them. His entries are long, but he doesn’t write again after May. In the back pocket: List of Pastors and Theological Professors of Lutheran Free Church, and a receipt.
