Johan Mattson Autobiography

Consists of a document written by Johan Mattson in 1951 and translated between 1953-54 and is his autobiography and biographical sketch of his parents and birthplace.

Knut Pedersen Haslerud Papers

Contains a four-page manuscript entitled "Reisen Til America" about Knut Pedersen Haslerud’s voyage to America in 1883, and the immigrant’s condition in the new land. He discusses his positive experience on the Thingvalla Line during the trip. He gives advice to Scandinavian emigrants: what to bring and what to expect on the ride over. It also includes information on the names and dates of five generations of his family history. There are also excerpts from several letters, as he corresponded extensively with his brother. He writes about poverty in Norway before coming to America.

Knud Olsen Hovie Vaccination Certificate

Consists of a photocopy of Knud Olsen Hovie’s cowpox vaccination certificate and describes the authenticity of the cowpox vaccination. The original is in Norwegian with an English translation on the verso.

Jonas Olson family papers

Consists of a manuscript describing the Olson family’s history beginning with Jonas (born 1831) and his wife Anna Britta Hed (born 1835). The manuscript talks about their lives as immigrants and pioneers in Minnesota. History about their daughter Josephine and her husband John Olson and their personalities and their children is also discussed.

Carl Frederick Solberg Papers

The first two pages are a short biography of Carl Solberg written by the translator, C.A. Clausen. Also included in the collection is a collection of letters written when Carl Solberg was a war correspondent for "Emigranten." He traveled with the Fifteenth Wisconsin, the “Norwegian Regiment,” during the Civil War; and these letters are an account of his observations between 2 March and 4 April 1862.

Baalson Centennial Family History

These documents are the family history of the Baalson family beginning with Ellen and Kari Baalson who came to America in 1861. Their descendents numbered close to 400 one hundred years later. The program for the Baalson Centennial shows that the event took place 4 July 1961 at Big Grove Church in Brooten, Minnesota. There is also a booklet that has a poem “Ode to Ellen and Kari Baalson” by Herman Baalson (the only living child of Ellen and Kari), a foreword by George Baalson, a family tree, a brief sketch of Elle and Kari Baalson’s history with a picture, and short biographies of family members.
