Biographical Note
The daughter of Erick Bjarne Hauke has published the record her father left of his childhood in Haukø, Vemundvik District of Trondelag, Norway up to his 70th birthday in Oregon in 1957. Early life in rural Norway is recalled. The father left Norway at the age of 17 for Astoria, Oregon. He married in 1912 and became active in the Norwegian Sangerfest organization in 1915 and became the City Treasurer for Astoria in 1923. After a brief period in California, he moved back to Oregon and became very active in the Sons of Norway becoming president in 1934. His visits to numerous lodges are detailed along with a trip to Norway in 1945. Relief efforts for Norway after the war and later trips are also included. He attended Pacific Lutheran Academy (now Pacific Lutheran University), lived in Minneapolis after becoming president of the Sons of Norway in 1934 and died July 11, 1977 in Portland, Oregon.
