Biographical Note
There is no information about the year that Gina Ruud left Norway for the United States, but she was only eighteen years old at the time. Initially lacking mastery of English, she started work in America as a housekeeper. She became active in her church and was the only female in a local debating society. It was there that she met her husband, Marcellus Anderson. Together they had four children. Marcellus left for Alaska to seek his fortune in the gold rush, returning home to Tacoma after a year and leaving again shortly thereafter. His next year away, Gina was informed that Marcellus had died in the Alaskan wildnerness, but three years after the birth of their fourth child, he returned again, later dying from complications from his time in Alaska. During all this time Gina cared for their house and children by herself, and focused on her children’s education. She was remembered in her daughter Ruth A. Trosper's essay as an intelligent, humorous, and enthusiastic woman.
