Biographical note
Reverend Rieke was born in Doehren in Germany's Hannover province on May 6, 1855. He did his ministerial training in the missionary seminary of Hermannsburg, and came to America in December, 1884. After having qualified in a colloquy under the late Dr. Allwardy, he was ordained to the ministry in Lebanon, Wisconsin.
On the 6th of August, 1885, he married Miss Anna Maneke. They had ten children, three of whom died in early childhood. After a busy two years of service in Cicero, Wisconsin, Reverend Rieke followed a call to the Northwest, where he became one of the foremost pathfinders, particularly in the states of Washington and Idaho. He was stationed at the following places during his career: Genessee, Fairfield, Walla Walla, Odessa, and later followed a call to Zeeland, North Dakota, where he was forced to leave because of unfavorable weather conditions. Returning to Washington, he took up the charge in Marcellus where he worked for two years. He was forced to retire from active work after Marcellus because of illness. He made his home near Winlock, where he spent his last days.
When about to leave his home on November 7th, he was overcome by such physical distress that the trip had to be postponed. Reverend Henry Rieke, one of the earliest pioneers of Joint Synod in the Washington District, died November 8th at 12:45AM. His wife, three sons, and four daughters survive him.
The funeral was held in Winlock, November 11th. Many friends from far and near came to pay their last respects to the departed brother. Ten brethren of the ministry followed the bier. Reverend Rhode took charge of the services, while six of the brethren acted as pallbearers. Reverend Wittrock Sr., officiated at the home; Reverends Rhode and Kilian at the alter, and Reverends Berthold at the grave. Sermons were delivered by Reverends Groschupf, Krause, and Wittrock, Jr. Other Brethren in Attendance were Reverends Salzman, Ludwig, and Labes-Gruschupf.
