Schnackenberg Family History

File contains a detailed history of the Snackenberg family researched and written by Jim Skurdall following correspondence with Dr. Schnackenberg’s daughter, Mary. Materials contain information about the first Schnackenberg immigrants from Germany and England, maternal and paternal ancestry of past relatives, and family connections to Norway.

Gjertrud Schnackenberg

Materials relating to Schnackenberg’s youngest daughter, Gjertrud Schnackenberg. File includes her poem “Advent Calendar”(1981), an article on her husband Robert Nozick (1983), materials concerning the honorary Doctor of Letters she received from Mount Holyoke (1985), and an interview with her printed in the Tacoma News Tribune (1985).

Faculty Questionnaire

A questionnaire drawn up by Dr. Schnackenberg as the representative of the faculty to the Board of Regents to survey faculty opinion about various aspects of the university. File includes a regular copy and the score copy.

Correspondence, 1973

Schnackenberg’s correspondence during his years at PLU which contains both personal and university-related letters. Subjects covered in this file include: correspondence with student and colleagues, church-related business, materials related to Schnackenberg’s position as Chair of PLU’s History Department, family and/or personal business, and miscellaneous notes.

Letter to Harvey Neufeld

An extensive letter to Harvey Neufeld, the Executive Assistant for Alumni and Development Campus, regarding the need for a careful articulation of university objectives and implementation. The letter contains a historical overview of the issue.

Faculty Resolutions (Confidential)

Materials documenting the conflict between faculty members and President Wiegman in 1973. File includes: a request for Faculty Opinion and Information created by Schnackenberg, the tally of the survey returns, memo with the results of the questionnaire, correspondence regarding the result of the survey and the subsequent actions of the faculty, the “President’s Message” at the PLU Corporation Meeting, and resolutions of the Corporation calling for the appointment of an acting President. This file is denoted as confidential.

Materials found in Dr. Schnackenberg’s briefcase after his death. Original order has been preserved. File includes: information on the League of Women Voters of Washington, materials on grants, questionnaire on equality and rights, results of the questionnaire, student profiles, etc.

President Wiegman 2

Materials relating to President Wiegman’s tenure at PLU which were collected by Dr. Schnackenberg. File includes: further correspondence regarding the question of the presidency, minutes of faculty meetings, results of a faculty ballot regarding the retention of the president, drafts of the agreement reached between Wiegman and the university, correspondence regarding the agreement, reports to interested parties regarding the decision, committee reports, and an invitation to a farewell gathering for Dr. Wiegman.

Final Copy of On Studying History

Includes a bound copy of Dr. Schnackenberg’s history primer, On Studying History, with the inside message of: “Privileged papers in preparation for publication. Reproduction in any form is prohibited without permission of the author.”

General materials on the Division of Social Sciences. File includes: notes on developments within the department, copies of departmental policies, criteria for determining chairmen, memos for divisional priorities, minutes of faculty meetings, proposals for By-law changes, and requests for a report on tuition income and enrollment ratios.
