Diary 1898

This diary was possibly kept during his time at Luther Seminary. Xavier mentions that he is still printing, had obtained a bicycle and spends time riding, visits home during the summer, and preaches at nearby churches amidst his usual chores. It also contains a cash account, expenses, and a letter at the back of the diary.

Diary 1897

This diary was possibly kept during his time at Luther Seminary. In this diary Xavier mentions that he is still working on printing, writes letters and reads on Sundays, begins to write, print, and preaching a large number of sermons (of which he sends mimeographed copies off), on October 23 he shaved part of his beard off and did not like the result, and continues to play tennis with friends.

Diary 1896

This diary was possibly kept during his time at Luther Seminary. This diary mentions time visiting with professors, printing on with a mimeograph, and visits and/or spends time with Stubs. At the back of the book there is an account of letters sent/received and a list of addresses. In the back pocket there are the following: a receipt for a $10 money order, receipt from Lutheran Publishing House, Minneapolis Paper Company, a American Express company, and an advertisement for “Chinese sensitive leaf.”

Diary 1895

This diary is possibly kept during his time at Luther Seminary. In this diary, Xavier mentions that he has read Black Beauty and The Adopted Daughter, works regularly, that he stays home on Sundays, and plays Parcheesi, tennis, and chess with friends. Xavier continues to write in code but increasingly skips writing on certain days. An account of letters written/received, math cheat sheets, and cash accounts appear at the back of the diary.

Diary 1894

This diary contains a receipt form Ben Bear Square-Dealing Clothier, records of love letters sent through his friend, regular work (location or position unnamed), time spent with a woman named Miss Anable, that he read Les Miserables and attended choir practice. In this diary Xavier no longer writes about the weather, writes often in code, and crosses out a number of pages. A cash account and account of letters sent/received appears at the end of the diary. This diary is missing from the collection.

Diary 1893

Diary kept while Xavier was at Luther College. In it he frequently writes and mentions choir, that he “staid home” to read and write, offer of employment as President at Bode Academy, with graduation on August 7th. Contains many doodles, a feather between two pages in May, and letters, accounts, and addresses at the back of the diary.

Diary 1892

Diary kept while Xavier was at Luther College. In it he mentions purchases (usually photographs and papers) and prices, frequent meals with friends, extracurricular activities like choir and debate, examinations in Latin, Greek, and History. Also mentioned are what he is reading at the time (Plato, Ibsen, etc.), with sporadic notations of weather and temperature.
