Schnackenberg Family History

File contains a detailed history of the Snackenberg family researched and written by Jim Skurdall following correspondence with Dr. Schnackenberg’s daughter, Mary. Materials contain information about the first Schnackenberg immigrants from Germany and England, maternal and paternal ancestry of past relatives, and family connections to Norway.

Obituaries, Memorial Service, and Tributes

A biography of Dr. Schnackenberg upon his acceptance of the position of associate professor, a copy of Dr. Schnackenberg’s will, the program from his memorial service, correspondence regarding his death and funeral arrangements, clippings from PLU publications, and poems by Gjertrud Schnackenberg published in Scene about her father. Also includes a transcript of an interview Kerstin Ringdhal conducted with Doris Schnackenberg Bohman, Dr. Schnackenberg’s wife, and programs for her memorial service.

Gjertrud Schnackenberg

Materials relating to Schnackenberg’s youngest daughter, Gjertrud Schnackenberg. File includes her poem “Advent Calendar”(1981), an article on her husband Robert Nozick (1983), materials concerning the honorary Doctor of Letters she received from Mount Holyoke (1985), and an interview with her printed in the Tacoma News Tribune (1985).

Department of Public Relations’ Faculty Information Sheet (1954, with subsequent additions), requests for biographical information from Who’s Who Among Authors and Journalists, handwritten notes for curriculum vitae, Outstanding Educators of America pamphlet with their request for biographical information, and various versions of Schnackenberg’s vitae (1973).

Social Sciences Division

General materials on the Division of Social Sciences. File includes: notes on developments within the department, copies of departmental policies, criteria for determining chairmen, memos for divisional priorities, minutes of faculty meetings, proposals for By-law changes, and requests for a report on tuition income and enrollment ratios.

Association of Washington Historians

Materials on the establishment of the Association of Washington Historians. File includes: proceedings of the Regional Conference for Northwest History (1948), a copy of House Bill No. 650, a memo summarizing the bill, a statement of organization for The Association of Washington Historians (1973), and a working draft of the constitution for the Association of Washington Historians.

Materials relating to President Wiegman’s tenure at PLU which were collected by Dr. Schnackenberg. File includes: newsletters from Federal City College, memos regarding Wiegman’s election and inauguration, correspondence with Wiegman, Dr. Schnackenberg’s remarks at the inauguration, a copy of the inauguration program, letters of concern to the Board of Regents, minutes of Board of Regents meetings, correspondence between Wiegman and the board, correspondence regarding the resignation of staff and faculty members, faculty resolutions in regards to Wiegman, newspaper clippings, responses by Wiegman, remarks made by Board of Regents member Knudson at a faculty meeting, materials regarding student petition to the resolutions of the Board of Regents, statements by the ASPLU president, and further correspondence regarding the question of the presidency.

Faculty Questionnaire

A questionnaire drawn up by Dr. Schnackenberg as the representative of the faculty to the Board of Regents to survey faculty opinion about various aspects of the university. File includes a regular copy and the score copy.

Family History

Materials regarding the genealogy of the Schnackenberg family (1970-1973). Letters are primarily from Eva (Schnackenburg) Sudlow who initiated correspondence in an attempt to advance her research on the family’s history. Also, included are sketches the Schnackenberg Wappen (Crest), a general history dating back to the medieval times, and photos from her travels related to this research.
