Inga Broadland Knutzen was born in Lyngdal, Norway on 17 May 1902 to Henry and Ellen Broadland. She had a younger sister, Martha, and two older brothers, Hans and Elias. Her father was a carpenter and spent the first seven years of Inga’s life working in America. She lived in Norway with her mother and siblings until 1909, when they joined her father in America.

Inga attended Burlington High School and graduated in 1921. She went to Bellingham Normal School 1921-1922, and then taught school for two years in Lake Campbell, Washington.
