      Historical Note

The name K. Berge is written on the cover of the diary, but at least four people contributed to its contents, one after the other. It is in Norwegian and includes: 20 October 1874 to 13 November 1874 written by a teacher from Hjelmeland, Norway, about the days in class, what he taught, and about the people in class; 5 November 1877 to 5 November 1878 written by the brother of the deceased teacher about school and the military; an undated section entitled “Fra Ny Stavanger” (From New Stavanger) written by Edv. Larsen about a boat trip planned on the boat Paddaa across the North Sea, life on board and supplies; 15 January 1882 until 13 March 1884 written by John Lie about his life and including some poems and songs that he wrote.
