Matilda Johnson was born on November 16, 1881. Matilda grew up with much sorry in her life. Her two younger sisters died within days of each other. From there illness inflicted her family. Her mother was sick for the last part of her life. Matilda took it upon herself to care for her mother in her deathbed. She also experienced her father’s death a few years later. She also stayed by his bedside. After his death she decided that she was going to travel to America. She retells of her experience on the boat. Once she came to America, she had to look for a job. She worked as a maid for the first few years of her life. In 1913, she traveled to Washington state and met the man who would become her husband.
