General note
St. Luke’s was organized in 1929 when Elling Ramsey, a Luther Seminary student, spent the summer conducting parochial schools and services. Rev. Earl Soiland was called as the first pastor and he supervised the building of the church. A loan, which had been promised by the Home Mission Board, did not materialize, but the congregation paid the debt to the local lumber companies and the church was ready for use on May 17, 1930. An accomplished carpenter, Rev. Soiland built the altar, pulpit, baptismal front, and parsonage. A parish hall was completed in 1954. A new parsonage was built on property donated by a member and dedicated on November 20, 1960. In 1960 Bethany Lutheran Church, a rural congregation northeast of Shelby, merged with St. Luke’s. In 1978 the original church was sold and moved to a new location, and construction was begun for a new sanctuary, which was dedicated on June 3, 1979.
