Scope and content

Series I consists of the records of the South Suburban Sewer District. The series is further divided into the following subseries: Administrative Records; Annexations; Correspondence; Planning & Reference Records; and Regional Newspaper Clippings.

Though the series includes materials created between 1955 and 1984, the bulk of the material dates between 1965 and 1975, highlighting the South Suburban Sewer District’s annexation of nearby areas, as well as their planning and research into creating a sewerage system capable of serving the densely populated areas of the unincorporated suburb of Parkland, Washington. Also included in this series is South Suburban Sewer District meeting minutes and document files, as well as correspondence with landowners, legal representation, the County and State, and businesses and interested parties throughout Pierce County. As well as this, the collection includes newspaper clippings, primarily from Tacoma News Tribune and Pierce County Herald & Times Journal, relating to the activities of the Sewer District.

System of arrangement

This series is arranged chronologically and alphabetically therein when possible. Deviations from this organizational structure are to account for the preservation needs of legal and standard sized records. The newspaper clipping subseries is organized in original order, and has been digitized due to preservation concerns relating to the newspaper quality and the fact that many have been annotated and marked by SSSD members. Physical copies of the newspaper clippings exist as reference material only.
