Biographical Note
Thor Meland was born in 1861 on the family farm in Tjugm Parish, near Vetlefjord, Norway. In 1889, he and his brother John immigrated to the U.S., staying first in Wisconsin and then moving to Moscow, Idaho, in 1892. They settled down near the farm of their older brother, Peter, and a brother-in-law, Christen Langeteig. In 1904, Thor went to North Dakota and settled on a farm there, returning to Idaho after he retired. John continued to reside in Idaho, working as a farmer, and marrying a “mail order bride.” Thor Meland died in 1950, and his brother John died in 1955.
