      Audun Trygge Toven was born September 17, 1936, in Eidsvåg, Nesset, Møre og Romsdal, Norway. He attended University of Washington where he earned a Master’s degree in Scandinavian Studies. He joined the PLU faculty in 1967 and worked as an associate professor of Norwegian. During his time in the Pacific Northwest he advanced Norwegian-American relations, encouraged countless PLU students to study away in Norway, played a leading role in hosting Norwegian guests at PLU and was presented with the Royal Norwegian Order of Merit by Norway’s ambassador, His Excellency Knut Vollebaek. Toven also helped found the Scandinavian Cultural Center at PLU and the Scandinavian Studies program.

      Toven passed away after a battle with cancer on November 15, 2011.
