Esther Allstrum Papers

Consists of an article on Esther Allstrum from the “Time Machine” section of the “Tacoma News Tribune,” published on 27 September 1981. It includes information on Ms. Allstrum’s occupations and activities.

Martin Ulvestad Papers

Contains an original 1919 leaflet about Ulvestad entitled, Det norke Folks Historieforsker i Amerika (The Norwegian People's History Researcher in America). It is written in Norwegian and includes a photograph of Ulvestad and his family.

Hjalmar Björk Papers

This is a copy of a scrapbook containing information pertaining to Hjalmar Björk. There is a biography of his life written at the time of his death and five clippings of announcements of his death in Swedish. There is also a sample of his writing which includes seventy-five Swedish poems, six longer prose pieces, and published in the Swedish-American Tribune issues of December 1958, 1959, 1960, 1961, and 1964, sixteen original letters of correspondence in both English and Swedish from Hjalmar to his niece Hazel Tanglin along with copies of the envelops sent between the years 1959 and 1963, and a clipping about King Christian of Denmark falling off his horse and recovering.

John H. Strande Family History

Consists of a copy of John H. Strande’s obituary clipping (dated 9 September 1928) and a handwritten list of genealogical information. There is also a brief letter regarding Julia Mathilda Johnson and an explanation as to why the family name of Johnson was changed to Strande in 1884.

Edward Emanuel Johnson

This file includes a copy of Edward Emanuel Johnson's newspaper obituary, a copy of Johnson's record of naturalization, and a copy of an individual's reminiscences of meeting Johnson at the age of 92. There is also a copy of a travel permit for Anna Oberg that was signed by her pastor in Lyrestad, Skaraborg, Sweden, a copy of an application for placer mining signed by Edvard Johnson and a mining certificate issued by the Dominion of Canada in 1898. An issue of The Sea Chest, the journal of the Puget Sound Maritime Historical Society, in addition to copies of photographs of Johnson's shipyard and with Anna Oberg for their wedding.

Svanøe Family History

A detailed genealogical list of the Svanøe family and an historical account of its “establishment” on the island for which the family is named. Within this is also an extensive description of Svanøy itself, complete with a description of its geography. Many of these documents, including speeches and sermons retelling the family story, were written and/or compiled especially for the Svanøe family banquet that was held at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa on the 10 July 1994. Also included is a well-wishing letter from Ambassador Harald Svanøe Midttun who also retold the family story, sending his greetings to the family and reaffirming his own ties to the Svanøe family in America, as his grandfather was Atle Svanøe. The Nordic Fest sermon that is part of this collection tells the Svanøe story as it relates to that of Hans Nielsen Hauge and the religious aspects of the family’s foundation, the immigrant experience, and Norway’s 19th Century “Nation Building” as a whole. There is also a photocopy of a book documenting various Norwegian immigrants to America with a short excerpt on Atle Svanøe. Documents specific to the family banquet include a program for the event with family tributes, presentations, and genealogical updates, an invitation letter to the banquet and travel arrangements, and addresses of the various family members in America, Canada, and in Scandinavia. There are also articles in local Midwestern newspapers specific to the Svanøe family story and legacy.

Brodin Family History

The Brodin family papers consist of manuscripts pertaining to Old Brodin and an overview of the Brodin family, a map of Dalsland, letters from Carl Brodin to family members, John Brodin’s certificate of citizenship, articles, one in Swedish, and seven family photographs. Also included in the collection are a first through sixth generations quick reference list, Brodin genealogy list, and a first through tenth generations list.
